Most visitors fly into Florence's own airport or Pisa's, with Bologna as a third option. All are well connected to Santa Maria Novella, Florence's main station.

Florence airport (Amerigo Vespucci, FLR)

A small airport a few kilometres north-west of the centre.

Tram

The T2 tram line runs from outside the terminal into the city, stopping near Santa Maria Novella station; recent guides put the journey at about 20 minutes. It continues beyond the station towards Piazza San Marco. Trams run from early morning until after midnight.

  • Ticket: a standard city ticket covers it. Transport guides report the single ticket rose from €1.70 to €2.00 for 90 minutes on 1 August 2026. You can also tap a contactless card on board.
  • Validate before or as you board.

Taxi

Taxis wait outside arrivals and charge a regulated flat fare to the centre, with supplements at night, on Sundays and on holidays. Figures published in 2026 disagreed (around €25 to €28 by day), so check the tariff displayed at the rank before you get in.

Pisa airport (Galileo Galilei, PSA)

Pisa has more international flights and is the usual alternative.

  • PisaMover: an automated shuttle from the terminal to Pisa Centrale station in a few minutes, running frequently.
  • Train: from Pisa Centrale to Firenze Santa Maria Novella. Regional trains take roughly an hour or a little more; some faster trains are quicker. Departures are frequent.
  • Bus: direct buses run between Pisa airport and Florence, taking about an hour or more depending on traffic.

Allow about an hour and a half door to door. If your flight lands late, check the last train before you book.

Bologna airport (BLQ)

Some flights only reach Bologna. A shuttle connects the airport to Bologna Centrale, from where high-speed trains reach Florence in under an hour. Direct buses to Florence also run. Allow at least two hours in total.

Arriving by train

High-speed trains from other Italian cities arrive at Firenze Santa Maria Novella, in the centre, or occasionally at Campo di Marte or Rifredi. Check your ticket: Santa Maria Novella is a short walk or tram ride from most hotels.

Tips

  • Do not drive into the centre. The ZTL limited traffic zone catches rental cars with automatic fines. See getting around.
  • Taxis are not hailed in the street. Use ranks or book by phone or app.
  • Luggage: the centre has stone pavements and narrow streets; wheeled cases are noisy and slow but manageable.
